Though you can enjoy this simple orange kale smoothie year round, it’s a perfect recipe for winter. It uses citrus and cruciferous kale near the peak of season. I’m not usually a fan of kale smoothies, but the addition of frozen pineapple helps to balance out those green notes. And it’s hard to argue with the nutrition packed into each glass.
Dairy-Free Orange Kale Smoothie for Bone and Heart Health
More than a decade of research shows 100% orange juice and its vitamins and minerals may play a beneficial role in battling risk factors for heart disease. This includes a recent high blood pressure study in Spain that found 2 cups of orange juice per day resulted in “significant reductions in systolic blood pressure and other markers of heart health and inflammation.”
Research has also correlated orange juice to bone density in both children and adults. This recipe pairs it with kale, which is high in calcium and vitamin K. Together, they make what some might call a dairy-free superfood smoothie for bone health.
