Food Brands that use Dedicated Dairy-Free Facilities

Dairy is in so many foods, on so many production lines, that it’s hard to find products without a “may contain” statement for milk. Not to mention, those statements are voluntary – many products have high dairy cross-contamination risk and no warning label. But I want to focus on the positive side of things. Which food companies go above and beyond for dairy-free consumers? After a great deal of research, we’ve found dozens of food manufacturers that actually use dedicated dairy-free facilities for production.

Just because a brand isn’t on this list does not mean they are not a dairy-free friendly company. Many companies use strict allergen protocols and some even use dedicated lines and do allergen testing. This post focuses on companies that have the capability to add an extra layer of safety by using dairy-free facilities for production.

FAQs

Why isn’t my favorite dairy-free brand on this list?

For one of two reasons. Either they don’t use a dairy-free facility for production, or we weren’t aware that they use a dairy-free facility for production. We went through hundreds of companies, but of course, we are going to miss some! If you have confirmed that they use a dairy-free facility, let us know! But if not, keep in mind that many dairy-free products are made on shared facilities and often even on shared lines.

If a brand isn’t on this list, does that mean it isn’t safe for milk allergies?

No. There are many brands that follow strict cleaning processes, have allergen testing protocols, and/or use dedicated dairy-free lines. This list covers only products made in dedicated dairy-free facilities. Contact companies directly to find out their procedures.

If a brand is on this list, does that mean it is safe for milk allergies?

No. As mentioned above, there is no such thing as 100% allergen-free. Only you can decide what is safe enough for your needs. If dealing with a strict food allergy, always contact the company to discuss their current ingredients, processes, facility, and sourcing. Each of these factors can change at any time. This list is just a helpful guide for ideas.

Why do you only cover dedicated dairy-free facilities and not dedicated dairy-free lines?

The latter is more of a gray area. Is the line dairy-fee due to rotation, or does the company only make dairy-free products on that line 100% of the time? What is the likelihood that they could switch to another line in the facility in the near future? Where is that line located in the facility? Is it next to a cheddar chip manufacturer where cheese dust could easily spread? Are some flavors made on a dedicated line but not others? The more variables added, the harder it is to assess. Dairy-free facilities are more straight-forward, and we think a great starting point for finding dairy-free brands. Not to mention, there are still over 75 of them on this list!

Why do you list coconut and tree nuts separately?

According to the FDA food allergy labeling law, coconut is considered a tree nut. But coconut is not actually a tree nut, and coconut allergies are no more common in people with tree nut allergies than they are in people without tree nut allergies. We list them separately since most people (not all!) with tree nut allergies can safely consume coconut. No one seems to firmly know why the FDA did this, and getting the policy changed has proven difficult.

Why are there so few Dairy-Free Ice Creams, Milks, and Creamers on this list?

Unfortunately, most dairy-free ice creams, milks, and creamers are made in dairy facilities, and usually on shared lines at some point during the production process. This is often the case even if there isn’t a “may contain” label on the product. But most dairy alternative producers do follow allergen protocols to help prevent cross-contamination with milk.
