Salt and Straw began in Oregon, but this ice creamery has rapidly expanded. They now have over a dozen scoop shops in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Anaheim (yes, Disneyland!), and San Diego serving small batch, artisanal ice cream made from local ingredients. And, thanks to 2020, they also ship nationwide.

Salt & Straw always has at least two vegan options, and in January, they launch a full dairy-free Vegandulgence Series with five flavors.

Salt and Straw Launches Vegandulgence Series at all Ice Cream Shops

For the month of January, all Salt and Straw stores and their online shop will feature their new selection of five vegan flavors. All five varieties are vegan and gluten-free, and highlight different plant-based bases like oat milk, coconut cream, and avocado. (The selection below is for 2021, but it changes annually.)

  • Peanut Butter Strawberry Crumble (contains peanuts).
  • Bourbon & Caramelized Honeycomb (contains coconut and soy)
  • Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream (contains coconut and hazelnut)
  • Coconut Rice Pudding (contains coconut)
  • Banana Avocado Sorbet (no major allergens, coconut-free)

After January, other vegan pint flavors will pop up, but they do rotate and change from month to month. So stock up on some pints when you find ones that you love.

Vegan Flavors to Enjoy Year Round at Salt and Straw

Even after the big January series, you can count on Salt and Straw to have a sorbet and at least one creamy,  dairy-free flavor on hand. They have “vegan menus” to help customers order their most indulgent experience.

Some of the other vegan varieties that you might come across include Roasted Strawberry Coconut, Freckled Mint TCHO-colate Chip, Raspberry Ginger Beer, and Cloudforest Chocolate Hazelnut Cookies & Cream. They also serve holiday flavors, like Mummy’s Pumpkin Spiced Potion in fall and Berries, Beans, & BBQ Sauce in summer (yes, I said beans).

The flavors are usually gluten-free too, but I was told in-store that their cones contain both dairy and gluten. So opt for a cup when making your order.

I had the chance to visit their Lake Oswego location, which is just outside of Portland. I loved how the staff came out into the line to offer whatever samples you want – no waiting! They had a sorbet and the Strawberry Coconut, so I tried samples of those. The sorbet was good, but I wasn’t in a sorbet mood. The Strawberry Coconut was very rich and creamy with warm strawberry weaved throughout. I’m just a little burnt out on dairy-free coconut ice cream, and it was very coconut. I didn’t get a scoop, but my aunt and dad did buy scoops that they both enjoyed.

I’m hoping to get the chance to try some of there other vegan flavors when traveling. But tell me which flavors to try (or not try). You can leave your own dairy-free rating and review for Salt and Straw below.

What Others Are Saying …

Not enough non-dairy variety

December 31, 2019

I’m not a chocolate, peanut butter, lemon or strawberry person, so their flavors usually don’t do much for me. We found Frankie & Jo’s in the Seattle area and ALL of their ice cream is plant-based and doesn’t all taste like coconut (which I am also not a big fan of all coconut milk based ice cream tasting like!). I will drive way out of my way just to go to a Frankie & Jo’s location. My husband, who can eat dairy, really loves the plant-based flavors too!
