I can always count on Hannah for wildly creative, and often insanely easy, vegan recipes. She has no rules when it comes to whipping up new dairy-free dishes, and it shows with her purple cow ice cream recipe. There are so many reasons why grape ice cream doesn’t exist in stores, but Hannah doesn’t care. She created this sherbet-like dessert to highlight that oft forgotten fruit.
Dairy-Free Grape Ice Cream is the Purple Cow of Frozen Dessert
This aptly-named purple cow ice cream is a sample from Hannah’s first ice cream cookbook (yes, she has two!), called Vegan A La Mode. We originally shared it when the book was first released, but have since updated this post.
I actually love this grape ice cream recipe for back-to-school time. It contains just three inexpensive ingredients, can be free of any allergen that you or your family may have issues with (except grapes of course), and can even be made into frozen grape creamsicles if you don’t have an ice cream maker handy. Kids will love the pure grape flavor, and you will love how incredible EASY this recipe is!
Hannah got the inspiration for this recipe from a traditional soda shop float. But rather than vanilla ice cream in grape soda, she reversed the rolls, dropping generous scoops of grape ice cream in cream soda. Whether you opt for the soda part or not, you will want to make this dairy-free grape ice cream.
Milk Beverage Note
It’s completely up to you which brand you choose, but richer and/or more emulsified types will work best. For a slightly richer grape ice cream, you can substitute 1 (14-ounce) can of light canned coconut milk. Regular canned coconut milk will make it even richer, but will impart more coconut flavor, which can overpower the grape a bit.
